What a measurement here actually covers
Every figure published on this site was produced on the hardware described on the how we test page. At present that is a single MacBook Pro with an Apple M4 Pro and 24 GB unified memory. Nothing here describes any other device, and no article covers hardware absent from that page.
One machine is one sample. Silicon varies between units, thermal behaviour varies with assembly and with ambient temperature, battery figures vary with age and charge history, and storage performance varies with how full a drive is. A number measured here tells you what this machine did under the conditions stated in that article. It does not tell you what your machine will do, and it is not a population average.
Results are also tied to a specific macOS build, which is stamped on every article. Apple changes behaviour in point releases regularly. A figure that was accurate when published can stop being accurate after an update, and an article that has not been re-tested since its stamp date should be read with that in mind.
Following instructions carries risk
Articles here print commands and procedures that we ran ourselves. They worked on our machine, in our configuration, on the build stated. That is not a guarantee that they are safe on yours.
Terminal commands can delete data, change system behaviour, and produce outcomes that are difficult to reverse. Configuration changes can affect security and stability. Before running anything from this site, or from any technical site, you should understand what the command does and you should have a current backup you have actually tested restoring from. Where an article describes a procedure with meaningful risk, it says so, but the responsibility for what you run on your own machine is yours.

Accuracy and corrections

Why a number here may differ from yours
Several specific causes come up often enough to name. Ambient temperature changes battery and thermal readings materially, and Hyderabad runs warmer than a climate-controlled lab for much of the year. Storage performance depends on how full a drive is. Memory figures depend entirely on what is running, and the working set on this machine is a browser, an editor and a terminal rather than video editing or virtual machines. Network measurements describe one domestic connection in one apartment, over Wi-Fi.
None of those makes a published figure wrong. They make it specific, which is why every article states its conditions before its result. Where we expect a measurement to differ on other hardware, the article says so rather than leaving the reader to assume the number is universal.
Commands, and what running them can cost
Most commands published here only read. Reading is safe, and where an article is built entirely on read-only commands that is stated. Some articles necessarily involve commands that write, delete, or change configuration, and those carry a warning at the point of use rather than only in this page.
The general rule worth applying to any technical site, this one included: understand a command before running it, and have a backup you have actually restored from at least once. An untested backup is a belief rather than a safeguard.
